GU19 News

The Saints have lost a few players to college, and are looking for anyone who wants to play this fall.   They are still hoping to be State Champions, and represent Washington at regionals next summer.    They are also looking for guest players for Rimland and Bigfoot.  If you are interested, contact Kenny Ormsby at 206-364-6016 or kenny0358@comcast.net.   Or contact Sig Hermann at 206-523-2043 or sigherm@comcast.net
The 2004 GU19 Fall League will be made up of the following teams, four of whom played in Classic at U18:  SYSA Saints, FC Royals 85, T-Town Storm, FC Kitsap White 85, 3-Rivers SC 86, Blackhills '85, River City SC--Bonanzino.  It's an interesting league with a preponderance of U18 Classic teams which are continuing at U19.  One of these lucky teams will represent Washington on regionals next year in Colorado.   The FC Vancouver Viragos are another U19 team which will be competing through the summer in tournaments.
GU 19 Tryouts!    Not ready to quit playing soccer even if your U18 team is?   Consider joining a GU19 team through the summer, or even into fall, depending on whether you are playing in college, or even if you are playing in college, and want to play before and afterwards.    This page will be updated once word of where GU19 teams have been formed.   Right now, only three are listed (Saints, Royals, and FC Vancouver), but there are more GU19 teams which ended up forming.    See above..   http://www.theparrots.net/gu19_tryout_information_2004.htm
NAIA schools in the Northwest have been added to the College Soccer Programs of the Western US page.  (Click to go to table.)
The Parrots and Crossfire 85 will playing at the Thanksgiving Surf Cup this year in the U19 Super and Gold Groups respectively.    The Parrots play Surf White, Pleasanton Rage, and FC Portland.    Crossfire plays Davis Impact, OJSC Nightmares, and Inter FC.  Click here.

The Royals went to WAGS again this year and were placed in the top bracket, winning handily (4-0) in their first game against the PDA Galaxy, who were playing with only eight players because they had curiously scheduled their SATs on that day.  The Royals  lost their next two games by one goal margins.   The complete results can be found at under 19W at http://www.wagstournament.com/schedules/schedules.html.
Three Washington E teams, Eastside FC 84, Emerald City, and Extreme, all went to the Friendship Classic.   Eastside 84 did well, making it out of their bracket to the semifinals where they lost 1-0 to the regional finalist DeAnza Sharks.   (They have a small roster, so they borrowed some underage players from Crossfire and Eastside.)  Results at http://www.friendshipclassic.com/schedule.htm
Eastside 84 with different guest players than in the Evergreen including Blaze mainstays Christy Crudo and Brittney Beitel went to the Score at the Shore in NY.    Rimland had eight Parrots guesting on three different teams, and
Both the Royals and the Parrots had disappointing Surf Cups with the Royals in the Super Division and the Parrots in the Gold Division.   The Parrots opened strongly against the 2002 & 2003 regional semifinalist HSC Bulls but only managed a 2-2 tie.   They were overwhelmed 3-0 in the their second game against the eventual champions, Real Colorado, in their most lackluster Surf Cup showing by far.    In the third game they kept Surf Blue defending in their own half for most of the game, but gave up several counterattacks, and one of them finally led to a 1-0 win.    The Royals lost their first two games, 1-0 against Surf 19 and 3-0 against PW Eclipse, and tied their final game against the Madison 76ers 0-0, very disappointed not to have scored a goal.
Eastside 84 scored with four minutes left to beat the Parrots 1-0 in the Evergreen final, breaking the Parrots run of 35 straight tournament victories in-state (since last losing in the 2000 Evergreen to the Royals).    The Parrots beat the Royals 5-0 in their opening game, but the Royals made it to the semifinals, where they lost 3-0 to Eastside.
The Parrots won the 2003 Diadora in a high scoring final vs NWN Allez 84, a team they'd never played, except in indoor.   The Parrots created three early goals, and eventually built a 6-2 lead before giving up two quick goals midway through the second half, keeping things exciting until the 6-4 conclusion.  Last year's Portland Cup champions, the Vision, reached the semifinals, where they lost to the Parrots.   Vision beat Crossfire in the game to determine third place.  The former U19 State Champion Saints beat Extreme, and the Blaze beat the U19 Royals in the battle of second place teams from the four brackets.    The Vision beat Crossfire in the consolation game to come in third.   Complete results at: http://www.diadoracup.com
Last year's Diadora winners, Eastside 84 won the 2003 Portland Cup beating FC Portland Green in the final 3-1.     Other Washington teams at the tournament included P1 FC Kitsap 85, who came in second in their bracket behind FC Portland, and the P2 Heartbreakers, who felt great satisfaction in heroically outbattling FC Portland Green 1-0 on Saturday.   The results are at http://www.fcportland.org/brackets_points.htm.
Royals at Regionals.   They won their first two against Utah and Alaska, and lost their next game against Nevada.   In the quarterfinals they lost to the Rush (Colorado).   Details at http://www.regioniv.com/regional03/girls/G17.htm    Three Washington teams have reached the semifinals, the U19 Saints being the only girls team.
Congratulations to Emerald City and Norpoint, who are the newest teams in P1 at U18!  Both teams steadily worked up from Classic where they found themselves after the U14 LPT, and the players on Norpoint in particular must be happy because they didn't have any idea that they would be contesting for P1 back at tryout time in March.    Snohomish United beat Norpoint in their initial Saturday game, but lost to Emerald City at noon on Sunday, and were eliminated by Norpoint later that day.  ( The Shooting Stars chose not to be the fourth team in the playoff, so there was an unavoidable imbalance with games played by each team.)   LPT results for GU 18 here

FC Kitsap White 85, the NarYSA T-Town Storm. Blackhills FC 85, SYSA Fusion, FC Shoreline Heat, Skagit Storm, all qualified for Classic this year.    I'm not sure why Kitsap had to requalify but maybe they had too few returning players.   All the other teams are new to Classic.   (The Fusion are the team from the same club as the Parrots who has more of the original Parrots on it that the Parrots do, and so it's nice to see them move up.)

The Whidbey Islanders were forced to drop back to compete for Classic because they didn't have enough players committed to playing in the fall.  (Contact Sarah Holahan at sholahan@attbi.com  for more information.)  This allowed another team to move up from Classic: Eastside White.   The Fireballs and River City elected to stay in Classic, so the six "bottom" teams in P2 are set with the two eliminated teams from the upcoming P1 LPT joining them in a few weeks.   So Relentless, Harbor, Heartbreakers, Eastside Defiance, Whatcom Rangers, and Aanvallen are all P2 teams.    At the end of the season all of them were facing LPTs to get into P2 at best, so it's interesting how things have changed in this U18 year.
The Oregon State Champion was determined last weekend when the Lake Oswego Fusion beat the Willamette Posh 2-1 in overtime in the Snickers Championship final.   In Cal South on Saturday (5/17) the Slammers beat West Valley Samba 2-1 on a golden goal in OT and advanced to the Sunday (5/18).final against Surf who had won in PKs in their scoreless semi.   The Surf won the final 2-1.  It's been a different winner each year in southern California for the past three years.    The DeAnza Sharks easily repeated in Cal North a while ago.
LPT Draw results up for all age levels.    The Heartbreakers are definitely in P2 with Eastside, the Whatcom Rangers, Aanvallen, and the Fireballs fighting it out for the final two spots.   Eleven teams are contesting for the final four Classic slots.
Six teams are competing at the U19 level: Apple Valley Zephyr,  Eastside FC 84 Red, FC Royals 85, FC Royals 84, NWN Saints, and SSSFC Heat.
Click on the logo to the left to go to their website to learn the schedules and everything else about the Showcase.   Except for the scores.    Extreme won all four of their games.   In general, the Washington teams did well against Oregon and Idaho.   On Saturday the Parrots met the Royals in one of their rare battles.  As was the case in their meeting at the Showcase two years earlier on the same field, a large crowd and many coaches watched an exciting game.   The Parrots won 1-0.
Many strong Washington club teams attended the Fifth Annual WSU 7-A-Side Classic.   The groupings and schedule were posted at http://wsucougars.ocsn.com/sports/w-soccer/spec-rel/042203aaa.html    The games were played on field turf.   Some teams are split their rosters into two teams, and others went with one team of up to 12 players.   Games were 30 minutes long on half a field with full size goals and substitutions on the fly.   No offsides.   It was a great event which everyone seemed to enjoy.   And it's a great place for U18 teams to be seen by local college coaches because the UW, WSU, Gonzaga, Idaho, Portland State, Eastern, Central, Western, Seattle U, PLU, and even some Whitman players were there.
Players still looking for teams???   These teams have contacted me, and are looking for players:

Harbor FC has survived, so they will be playing in P2 this year.  Chris Ruffner will be their new coach (USSF "C" license, drafted by the Tacoma Stars).  "We had eight returning players, lost 2 players to Kitsap Red, one to Royals U19 and the rest have decided against premier soccer. We picked up several players from the Kitsap area and stand at 14, maybe 15."   Players interested in trying out for the team can contact their interim manager, Michael Blondin, at michaelrblondin@att.net.  Or you can reach Chris directly at chap_z@msn.com or phone # 253-761-8435.

FC Aanvallen 85 is looking for a goalkeeper!   They will be competing for a spot in P2.   Call Tom Gallegos at 253-288-2484 or 253-670-5577 cell, or e-mail him at thomas.gallegos@astrazeneca.com.

Norpoint 85 (who will be competing for a spot in P1) would add a couple of field players and a goal keeper if the right ones come along.  Steve Riggs is their coach, and he can be reached at home at 253-927-7924.   His work number is 253-833-6307.

Relentless (a P2 team which has never played lower than P2, and was once in P1) is still looking for few players.   Their coach, Craig Tomlinson of the Sounders, can be reached at 425-260-3634 craigtomlinson@juno.com, and their manager, Debbie Tonkovich, can be reached at 206-527-5516 relentless85@attbi.com.

The GU19 NW Nationals have combined with the Saints and will be called the NW Nationals Saints.    This will theoretically end up being a permanent option for GU17/18/19 players from the north part of Puget Sound.   This March the Saints were the GU19 Snickers Champions, and their success should help this year's GU19 version of the Saints get into tournaments this summer.   So this is a team to consider if you are looking for some exposure to college coaches.   They apparently do now have enough players to form a team, but are looking for more.  Call or e-mail Sig Hermann  (206-523-2043) or Kenny Ormsby (206-364-6016) for more information.   They will have their next tryout/practice on Sunday 3/13 from 1-2:30 pm at Martha Lake.

Other teams who are also looking for players will hopefully contact me so that I can add them.  Note that the 2002 IDDL team, the Fusion, still haven't had their tryouts.

LPTs will not go as anticipated because Eastside 85 has apparently decided to play as Eastside 84, adding a few players from last year's team, and playing this year at GU19.   Not a bad idea because they can take advantage of the track record of Eastside 84, which did pretty well out of state.   Also, the competition during the State Cup for the GU19 slot should be less intense than for the GU18 slot.   Good luck,  Eastside!  This move pushes Norpoint 85 into the running for P1.   For quite a while, there was a persistent rumor that Three Rivers was also not going to compete in the GU18 fall league and as of last Friday, this appears to be true from sources within last year's Three Rivers team.    So Snohomish United may be in the running for a P1 slot with Emerald City, Whidbey, and Norpoint.   Whidbey looked to be folding, but appear to have revived, though they will not attempt to play in P1.    In any case, P2 will be much different this year, and Classic even more so.   Please send any more details on teams to hindulogic@attbi.com.   Thanks to everyone who's sent me updates (including Jim Hart, Paul Sherman, and Jonn Knutson).

The GU17 Snickers Championships Cup proceeded pretty much as scripted during the first three weekends of bracket play.  If anything, the P1 teams were more dominant than usual.   The P1 3rd place Vision had the misfortune to draw the wildcard State Champion Royals this year so they have been thrown into the elimination round with their loss.   The top of Classic Heartbreakers played P2 Norpoint to a 1-1 draw with Norpoint advancing on least goals allowed.   Other than that, there was nothing resembling a surprise except possibly the Whatcom Rangers beating Relentless 4-1 in their final game, and Three Rivers choosing to forfeit and face a fine.

Apart from the game between the Royals and Vision, the two big games in bracket play were Eastside vs Crossfire and the Blaze vs Kitsap.   Both of these match-ups have developed into rivalries.

The Eastside vs Crossfire game was played at Eastlake on turf on a cool and foggy Tuesday night.  Crossfire only needed a tie to advance.  Eastside came out stronger initially, but Crossfire gradually settled down, and began to control the game,    Eastside did create some dangerous situations in the first half, often off mistakes from Crossfire, but they rarely ended in shots on goal.   Likewise, though Crossfire had more possession, thirty minutes into the first half they had had only one shot on goal, and only a couple of other chances.

At this point Eastside won a rare corner, and drove the ball to the near post at about waist level.  Crossfire didn't really move, and someone from Eastside did, and knocked the ball a short distance into the goal with her body.  Eastside briefly seemed confident after their goal, but Crossfire moved the ball into Eastside end rapidly, and Joan Quint got her foot onto ball about ten yards from the top of the penalty area, knocking a high spinning shot which slipped in under the crossbar in the corner of the goal off the Eastside keeper's upraised fingertips.  Not long after that, Sarah Martinez ran toward the penalty spot onto a beautiful diagonal cross from the right side which she one-touched into the right side of the goal.  The half ended with Crossfire looking very happy with their 2-1 lead.  They went on to control a lot of the second half.  Eastside had a couple of chances, though not nearly as many as in the first half.   It wasn't Eastside's night.   They looked uncomfortable on the bouncy turf, while Crossfire passed well, and played with more confidence.  The game remained close and exciting throughout the half, however, until Sarah scored again in the last minute or so.

Sunday 2/3, the Blaze and Kitsap met in a game which sent the winner against Crossfire and the loser to the Royals.  Blaze won 2-0.   In the two elimination round games, Norpoint traveled to Spokane to face Vision, and was bowled over 7-1.   Emerald City met Eastside in one of their familiar battles.   Eastside came out working very hard, and sent in several dangerous crosses, but were unable to convert any of them.   On one of Emerald City's first shots on goal, they had the great fortune to hit an Eastside player's arm in the box.    Usually, the ref doesn't make this call, but he did in this case.   Danielle Rueland finished it nicely on the ground in the left corner.   Emerald City gradually gained control of the game during that half with their passing, and with about ten minutes to go in the half Kaisa Keranen drilled a beautiful shot on a ball knocked back diagonally to her just beyond  the top of the penalty area.   Emerald City looked in control of the game through the rest of the half, and into the beginning of the second half, but Eastside began creating serious chances again, and Mary Boddy finished one of them nicely to the far post.   From that point onward, with much of the half remaining, Eastside pretty much dominated, and had a few great chances which they couldn't finish.  Emerald City finally seemed to regain their equilibrium with about ten minutes to go, but Eastside continued to create opportunities until the end, though none the match the pressure they applied for about 15 straight minutes after their first goal.  The whistle blew, and Emerald City hung on successfully for the 2-1 win.  This was arguably the most significant win in Emerald City 85's history.

The quarterfinals went as many would have predicted, though the results could easily have been different in a couple of games.

The Parrots were pretty dominant in maintaining possession in the first half against Vision, and created quite a few chances, but could only finish one of them.  The Vision did work hard, however, but were called for an inordinate number of fouls.   In the second half, the Vision had their first shot on goal early in the second half, and finished it nicely.   The Parrots immediately responded with a goal within half a minute of the kickoff.   They maintained their 2-1 lead until three minutes remaining when they made it 3-1 off a nice combination of passes.  Vision immediately won a direct off the kickoff, and scored, making the final two minutes exciting.   Vision applied a lot of pressure in the second half, and began to create chances, though not shots.    The Parrots suddenly were being called for all the fouls, and cards were inexplicably flowing, though the game was not particularly physical.    The Vision have scored 11 goals in six games against the Parrots, and clearly this match-up is always going to create close games.

Extreme beat Emerald City 4-0, but Dave Wymer, the Extreme coach, says that it was a much closer game than that with Emerald City apparently controlling things somewhat during the first 20 minutes of the game.   But Extreme has always been a very dangerous, opportunistic team with a lot of finishers, and the 2nd Place P1 team ended up with a decisive win over the top team in P2, who is very likely to move into P1 this June.

The Crossfire vs Blaze quarterfinal was pretty evenly matched.   The Blaze apparently dominated a lot of the early going, but Crossfire gradually began to create chances.   The ball flowed from end to end without many chances until finally Sarah Martinez started on right side somewhere out near the halfway line, and dribbled patiently through several players to somewhere near the penalty spot where she finished clinically to give Crossfire their only needed goal.   Crossfire had a few more chances after that, but the Blaze also had a couple of chances off headers off corners.    As expected, a pretty evenly-matched 1-0 game between the fourth and fifth teams in P1.

The game between the reigning State Champion Royals and Kitsap was interesting for a while, but eventually the Royals began creating many chances and ended up scoring two goals in the first half, and another near the end of the game to win 3-0.   They had quite a few shots.   Kitsap did have some chances, and kept fighting until the end.

Several GU17 Washington teams played in the Portland Winter Showcase including FC Kitsap Red, Spokane Vision, Extreme and Parrots from P1 and the Whidbey Islanders, one of the strongest P2 teams.   The astroplay fields were excellent, slow and soggy but no unpleasantly so, and the reffing was good.   The only problem was that the 35 minute halves were shortened to 30 minutes, so the games were too short.   All four WSYL P1 teams did well, with only one loss between them against some strong competition including former the 2001 & 2002 Oregon State Champion Lake Oswego Fusion and the recent Thanksgiving Surf Cup Gold Finalist FC Portland Green.   Kitsap tied the Fusion 1-1 and beat FC Portland Green 1-0.   Vision tied Portland 1-1 and the Fusion 0-0.   The Parrots beat Portland 2-0 and the Fusion 5-0.   The Oregon teams have only recently begun training after high school with their new players, and clearly were not yet running like clockwork, but will end up being as strong or stronger than ever.   (The Fusion was missing Whitney Talbot.)  Many Northwest colleges sent coaches there: Washington girls teams seemed very happy to have chosen to go, and this could easily become a very popular Showcase which it will be hard to get into unless they can find more than three fields to host it on in the future.   The Showcase was hosted by FC Portland, click on above left logo, and Portland City United, above right logo.
During Christmas Crossfire went to Florida to the Orange Classic, west of Fort Lauderdale in Plantation.   They reached the semifinals in the U17 Green Division, losing to the eventual champions.  Other Northwest teams attending included the Shamrocks under U15 Orange who didn't advance, despite a better record than the team in their bracket that did (due to the strange system of awarding points for goals).  The Eagles WON the U18 Green Division.   And the FC Royals 83 played in U19 Green.   Complete results at: http://www.orangeclassic.com/Results/results.htm

The Whidbey Islanders have a new website at www.whidbeyislanders.org.    (When the players graduate, the Whidbey Islanders organization can buy the URL from them.)  There is a large picture of them as Rimland Champions on their homepage.
The final weekend of GU17 in P1 was exciting and meaningful.   The Extreme needed to beat the Parrots in the final to maintain their #2 seed in the State Cup draw.   Sliding into #3 with a loss and a Vision win would have put them in the opening round with the state champion FC Royals, who always come in as a wild card when dropping down from P1 a year older (they reportedly finished 6th there this year).   The Extreme drew the Royals last year and were out by the elimination round.   Dos drew them the previous year and were out in the quarterfinals.    The Blaze drew the Royals the year before that and were out in the elimination round.
The Extreme came through in the second half with two well-placed goals by Leah Wymer to hand the Parrots their second loss of the season.  Vision lost to Crossfire 1-0 afterwards in a game which had become meaningless to Vision, but allowed Crossfire to finish 4th.  (Crossfire's lowest finish in four years in P1, but very nice considering two coaching changes in one year.)
Further down the table was resolved the season long struggle to avoid 7th place (and a possibly-disastrous trip to the LPTs in June 2003).   Eastside had been in that position for most of the season, but their 4-0 pasting of the Extreme followed by the Shadow's forfeit of a makeup game had put them in the position where they only needed to beat the Blaze, who hadn't won a game since October, though they'd tied Crossfire the previous weekend to ensure a spot in P1.   So the game mean almost nothing to the Blaze, and everything to Eastside, and the Blaze won 1-0.   With their loss, Eastside goes not only to the LPTs, but into the State Cup "Bracket of Death" with Crossfire, their rival from the east side of the lake, plus two of the top three teams in P2, Three Rivers and the Whidbey Islanders.   However, Eastside historically does well in the State Cup, and has reached the quarterfinals or better for the past four years, so they are expected to advance at least that far this year.   Kitsap, plagued by injuries during the season, gained the final protected P1 spot with Eastside's loss, and simultaneously moved in a bracket with the Blaze, Relentless (7th in P2) and the Whatcom Rangers (3rd in Classic).  For more details, follow the draw link below.
The State Cup draw was at Fife High School on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 pm.   The GU17 Snickers Cup draw came second to last so it was a long wait.    The number of teams dropped to 17, but we still have five divisions as normal.   1/26 games involving the Parrots and the Extreme are likely to be switched with their 1/11 bye weekends, so that the players asked to play for Washington in the Region IV 2003 ODP Championships January 24-27, 2003 in  Las Vegas will be able to attend.
The FC Royals 85 were in Texas at the same showcase connected to the Women's NCAA Semifinals which they did well in last year.  Field and results at http://www.warriorsoccer.org/iv/u17.html    They tied the Parsippany Electrons 1-1 and United Quest Red 3-3, both strong teams which the Parrots played in Surf Cup XXI, and beat the unheralded Oakwood SC from Connecticut 4-1.   The Royals 84 attended at the U18 level.
The Parrots, Crossfire and the Spokane Vision were at the Surf Cup during Thanksgiving.   The Parrots played at the Super Level, while Crossfire and the Vision played at the Gold Level.    This was Vision's first trip, while Crossfire's  previous trip was four years ago as U13s in the year of flood. http://www.surfcup.com/scores.html
The Parrots version of what happened is located here.

FCA Extreme and Eastside FC Red 85 went to the D'Feeters Showcase in Dallas over Thanksgiving.   The Extreme did very well, tying one, and winning the rest.   Eastside reportedly outplayed several teams, but couldn't finish. http://www.dfeeters.com/Showcase%20Schedule%202002.pdf
Crossfire 85 has a new coach: Daniel Struk.   Daniel has a USSF A License, has coached a lot of Washington teams, has taught a lot of coaches at WSYSA D and E License clinics, and in recent years was in charge of ODP for WSYSA, particularly the boys side of things, .  He returns to the Northwest from coaching in the PLAYS (Parks for LA Youth Soccer) program which tried to  bring soccer to inner city Los Angeles.    He is pictured on the right in this photo from his days there.
If you want to get completely unofficial scores for state league games before the state posts them, or district scores which the state understandably never posts, go to http://www.standingsplus.com (new URL).   The world needs more volunteers like the fanatic, Rob Satow, who created this site.   But everyone in the state should keep in mind that these standings are by no stretch of the imagination official!!!    The site will be posting State Cup scores as well, apparently.   Your challenge is learn to tell the difference between the Standings Plus website and the WSYSA website so you don't complain to the State about mistakes on the Standings Plus site (and vice versa).   The WSYSA site at www.wsysa.com  is the official one, (though keep in mind that the scores there are not official until the end of the season.)   The Standings Plus website has been down often, but hopefully the new webserver/URL will solve that problem.
Valez Nationals folded in midseason after their seventh game of the WSYL Classic Division.   They had won no games, and players were leaving.   Incidentally, in case you wondered, when a team quits in midseason, the state is required by its rules to fine the association a few hundred dollars.   The same thing is true during the State Cup.
Snohomish United has a new website at http://www.eteamz.com/SnohomishRedDevils/roster/   You can also reach it by clicking on their name on the standings page.
GU17 WSYL scores at http://www.theparrots.net/gu17_unofficial_wsyl_standings_2002.htm    (Thanks to Jacque Dempster for reading her 2002 Copy of WSYL& WSYDL Rules and Guidebook, and letting me know about the new three points for a win scoring system.)
Pleasanton results: http://www.friendshipclassic.com/schedule.htm   The Parrots and Eastside played at the GU17 level.  The Parrots tied two and lost to the DeAnza Sharks.   Eastside lost their games, though two of them were close.   Kitsap Red played at the U19 Gold level and lost two, and won one.
Jessica Scott of U16 Spokane Shadow and the 86 state ODP team the past two years was in a serious car accident in August in which her pelvis was broken in four places and her femur fractured as well.  She was returning with a girlfriend after dark on a trip down from Priest River in Idaho.    A section of brand-new road north of Spokane was completely unlined, and turned sharply left.   The driver didn't notice the road was turning left until too late, and shot off an embankment into trees.   Jessica had a rod and bolts inserted in her leg.   In a very successful three-and-a-half hour surgery at Harborview in Seattle a tear in her bladder was repaired and a screw put in her pelvis.  Since then things have gone well.   Jessica has been rehabbing very successfully, and will be playing soccer again next spring.  Jessica's mom, Leslie, was the volunteer mom of the 86 ODP team this summer, and she and her husband Don are fantastic, caring people.   A very unfortunate accident to one of the strongest players in the state at the U16 level, and one of the finest families anywhere, but it appears that Jessica will come back quickly and make a complete recovery.
Emerald City 85 won Bigfoot.   Not a major tournament, but all the news at http://www.snoyouthsoccer.com
Rimland Cup at http://www.whatcomsoccer.com    The Whidbey Islanders won the final over Eastside Red 1-0.  Four Parrots, Juli Edwards, Lisa Overbo, Kelly Kosco, and Jaime Souza, enjoyed the opportunity to guest with the Islanders who were missing many players.  Beautiful weather and fields as always.
Parrots and Royals in the Surf Cup at http://www.surfcup.com/surfcup.html    At the Super level the Royals lost 1-0 to the West Valley Samba, who recently won the GU16 National Championship.   They then tied the Greece Cobras, New York West champions and Region I semifinalists 1-1, and the Slammers from Cal South (former two time region IV champions) 0-0.   The D'Feeters beat WCFC Premier 2-1 in the final of that level.  http://www.surfcup.com/scxxii_scores/GU-17X.htm

At the Gold Level, the Parrots struggled in their first game against the Hawaii champions and Region IV semifinalist HSC Bulls to tie 1-1.   Guest player Adriana Medina-Gonzalez of Kitsap scored the Parrots goal off a beautiful left footed strike into the upper right corner.   In game 2 against Windy City Pride, the Pride scored on their first four attacks to lead 4-1.   The Parrots scored just before the half to make it 4-2.   The Parrots were controlling the game and everyone was convinced we would win, and at halftime someone suddenly had a deja vu  which confirmed the notion.   However, it proved incorrect, and we were only able to score two goals to tie the game 4-4.   Mary Kuder scored the final three goals; the first was off a long header by Lakeside teammate Kelly Kosco.  The game was rewarding because of the way we ground back into a tie which game us six points in our bracket.    In game 3 we outplayed the Colorado Rush Swoosh steadily throughout the game, creating a variety of chances and balls off the post, but we were able to score only one goal, on a chip into the far netting by right fullback guest player Darcie Gardner of Whatcom Rangers 86.   This was enough to send us through first in our bracket on the goals allowed tiebreaker.   We beat the Posh in the quarterfinals 1-0.   Lisa Overbo scored early on a great individual effort.   We controlled a lot of the first half, but the second half the Posh worked very, very hard in their direct style, and created some great chances.   In the semis, we lost 1-0 to the Cal North finalist Pleasanton Rage.   This was our best game, and we had many chances to score that we normally would have buried including a couple of sitters within the six yard box, but the gods were against us, and the Rage scored with three minutes left on one of their very rare shots up to that point.    We pushed up our guest player center back Tricia Loomis of Aanvallen 84, and had another couple of further chances to beat the keeper within 12 yards of the goal, but didn't.   But the players had played so well that no one was seriously discouraged.    All four guest players, Ad, Darcie, Trish, and Ashley McDougall of Crossfire, are very positive people, and fit in very well.    We were particularly grateful to them because two of our players, Dani Bridges and Katie Hall, were injured seriously enough that they were unable to play much after the first couple of games.   The Rage lost in the final 1-0 to the Minnesota Champions and Region II semifinalist St Croix Magnuson (who in their semifinal had beat Real Colorado, Colorado champions and Region IV semifinalists 1-0).    It was a great trip.   http://www.surfcup.com/scxxii_scores/GU-17G.htm

Most top GU17 teams from Washington state  plus three from Cal North (Santa Rosa Riptide, Elk Grove United, and the San Ramon Rush) played in the Evergreen International at http://www.evergreentournament.com/     All three Cal North teams were undefeated after two days.   However, the teams that reached the Saturday evening semifinals were the Parrots and the FCA Extreme in one bracket and Santa Rosa and Elk Grove in the other.    The Parrots came from behind to beat the FCA Extreme 2-1, and Santa Rosa broke open a close game after halftime to win 4-0.    The Parrots won the final against Santa Rosa 4-1.   The game was closer than the score indicates.
Crossfire were in Slammers Newport Classic in LA on this weekend (July 20-21).   They tied their first game against Coastal Quest Force 1-1.     They beat South Valley Spirit 2-0.   On Sunday they lost to the tournament host and favorite Slammers 3-1.    (The Slammers were the regional champions in 1999 and 2000.)   Only the top team goes through, and the Slammers beat Coastal Quest Force 3-0 and South Valley Spirit 7-0, so they'll go through for their bracket to the finals.    Complete results will be posted someday (but they aren't up yet) at http://www.slammers.org/classic02/schedule.htm
Eastside won the Diadora Cup on July 14, defeating Colorado Edge Select, a team centered in the Arvada (a NW suburb of Denver), 2-1 in the final.   Eastside got ahead 2-0, but Colorado gave a big push at the end to make things interesting.   In the semifinals, Eastside beat Relentless 3-0, and Colorado beat Whidbey Islanders 2-0.  Whidbey won the consolation game with Relentless 4-1 to place third.   The seedings for the brackets in this tournament were curious as the top three teams in the tournament were placed in the A bracket, including Emerald City 85.   Emerald City sponsors the tournament, so no one can accuse them of favoritism.   Complete tournament results at http://www.ecfc.net/scores.html
The 86 ODP regional camp started Monday, and most of the players on the state team were from the U17s.  On Monday they surprised the Cal South A team by outplaying them for the entire game, dominating in shots, chances, and corners, but only managed a 1-1 tie, when Heidi Gray dribbled through several players and scored on a left footed driven ball from just inside the penalty box with under 10 minutes remaining. On Tuesday, reality returned as the Washington ODP team struggled in a 3-1 loss to a very skilled and confident Cal North team.   The Washington goal came in the first half when Sarah Martinez scored off a nice through ball by Mary Kuder.   Despite that result, on the basis of their performance against Cal South seven players got a chance to play in the afternoon invitational game.  Hillary Heath, Jaime Souza, Adriana Gonzalez-Medina, Heidi Grey, Tricia Loomis, Micki Oda-Burns, and Juli Edwards all played well in a scoreless game.  (Mary Kuder and Jaime Souza played in a less meaningful invitational game on Monday: Mary played very well in that game.)   On Wednesday morning, the Washington team lost 2-1 to Colorado after leading 1-0 for most of the game.    Jeanne Webster headed in a ball which had been flicked on by an unknown Washington or Colorado player.    Wednesday's invitational game was between the 85 regional pool with 30 players invited including Micki Oda-Burns and Jeanne Webster.   Thursday the WA team got to play in the invitational game as the opposition, and defeated the invitational team players (including Whitney Talbott of the Lake Oswego Fusion) 4-1.   The first goal was by Jessica Scott (Spokane Shadow 86) from an assist from Sophie Spickard.   Hillary had a hat-trick: one unassisted, one off a flick from Kyle MacFarlane, and one from a through ball from Sophie.   On Friday morning the regional pool was announced.   The same five players who made it last year made it again from Washington: Jaime, Juli, Adriana, Heidi, and Micki, plus Hillary, who was playing up.   Congratulations to all of them, and to the Washington team for their very successful camp!

The regional staff suggested to Hillary that she drop down to her own age level for the pool training to assure that she would make it on the regional team, so she will return to Moscow in a week for the 87 regional pool training.   Hillary was a dominant force in forward, and had a great 86 camp.  Unfortunately, she was taken down in the box while scoring a goal fifteen minutes into the camp, tore ankle ligaments badly, and was out for seven weeks.

The Spokane Vision won the Portland Cup, beating FC Portland Green in the semifinals, and Westside Metros in the finals.    The Vision, though entering the tournament sorely undermanned through injuries and ODP, were not scored on in the tournament.  Results (though incomplete) at http://www.fcportland.org/pcup_u17g02.html
Emerald City 85 reached the semifinals at the Pegasus Cup in San Diego, losing to the eventual winners, Fram.   For details, check this website: http://www.pegasuscup.com/brackets2002/brackets.php?bracket_id=30
There were only two GU17 players, Kat Coulombe and Kali Paris, at the 85 regional ODP camp in Moscow, Idaho.   Kat is playing for the Washington team, and Kali is on a United team.   The Washington team lost to Arizona on Tuesday 4-1 on Tuesday, and beat New Mexico on Wednesday 5-2.   Seven different Washington players were looked at in the two pool trainings on those days.  On Wednesday the 85s played "DC United" and won 1-0.  On Thursday they tied Southern California, though it's unclear whether it was the A or B team.   In the end Washington only placed one player in the 85 regional pool, Kelsey Rasmussen, the Royals keeper.
Information on the 2003 State Cup final from the WSYSA website: "The Snickers Championship Cup Finals will be hosted by the Tacoma-Pierce Junior Soccer Association (TPCJSA). The Lakewood Stadium at Clover Park High School will serve as the home venue."  This field is still crowned, but now has a field turf surface.  (The 2003 Commissioners Cup finals will be at Renton Stadium.)
Royals at Regionals  The Royals did great in bracket play, eventually winning their division after initially tying the Cal South champion So Cal Blues.   Unfortunately, they lost 2-1 against the Colorado state champions, Real National, in the quarterfinals in the second overtime.   Whitney Clark, their excellent sweeper, was injured (reported kneecap dislocation with chipping of kneecap) in the preceding game against Idaho Wildcard team, and couldn't play, which undoubtedly impacted the game.   The West Valley Samba, the Cal South wildcard team, is the new Region IV champion.   They beat the Sereno Golden Eagles 86 (Arizona) 2-0 in the final.   In the semis, the Samba defeated Real National and the Golden Eagles beat Hawaii's HSC Bulls by 1-0 scores.
Here's the best place to learn the results of all four GU16 regionals.  You have to deal with the website creator's power rating system, but it's still useful to have everything in one place with all the team names listed.
Three GU17 (still considered GU16) teams, Crossfire, Kitsap, and the Blaze played at the Pikes Place Invitational in Colorado Springs.   All three went through second in the three different brackets (13 teams total).   Crossfire won the wildcard spot for the semifinals on points, as they had a 3-1 record while Crossfire and Kitsap were 2-1-1.   Crossfire lost to Arsenal White of California Sunday morning, but won the consolation game to come in third in the tournament.
The LPT results are up at http://www.wsysa.com/wsysa/2002_lpt.asp  In the battle for P1, Spokane Shadow and Eastside made it into the top league.   Three Rivers fell to P2, and Emerald City, leading 1-0 at halftime, lost the final game to Eastside and will remain in P2.  In the battle to get out of Classic, the Whidbey Islanders and Harbor FC were successful, while Valez went out after two games, and the Heartbreakers lost in the decisive afternoon game to Harbor 1-0, so Valez and the Heartbreakers must remain in Classic.   Three teams went from IDDL to Classic: Whatcom Rangers, Aanvallen, and the Fireballs, while Kitsap White was able to survive the LPT to return to Classic.   The Fireballs are an independent, former rec team from Bellevue who have been around since grade school, and it's great to see them finally reach the state league.   The new WSYL brackets can be found here.
In case anyone wonders where all these teams were as U13s, this information is still posted courtesy of the WSYSA website, (though you can't get there through their site).    Go here to check out the old history of our age level.   The Shadow was called the Skyhawks back then.
Crossfire 85 has an interesting new website at www.crossfiresoccer.org.
The Royals and Parrots went to the Texas Shootout in Houston on the first weekend in June.   The Royals beat the Region III ODP team on the first day 1-0.   I don't know yet what they did the following two days.  (They played the Sting on Saturday and New Jersey U16 ODP on Sunday.)   The Parrots won their opening game 3-0 over Eclipse Black, Texas South state finalists from 1998-2001.   In the second game they beat the FC Hammers from Cincinnati 5-0.   The final Parrots game was against Virginia U16 ODP, and the Parrots won 5-3.
Kitsap Red won final of the Rainier Challenge over Memorial Day beating Eastside Red 2-1.   Complete results of the tournament at the GU17 level are at http://www.geocities.com/fcunitedsoccer/rainierchallenge/Brackets2002/GU17.html
The Snohomish Invitational for the GU17s was held over Memorial Day.   The GU16 Crossfire, 2001 Div 1 Champions (and generally considered the strongest team in the state despite their disappointing State Cup showings in the past two years), defeated the perennially-solid Nortac Blaze 1-0 on a very late goal by an ex-Blaze player, Cori Hews.   Check for the complete scores at http://www.santossoccer.net.   For information on the tournament from the Blaze perspective, check their website at http://www.eteamz.com/blaze85/
The NW Showcase of Champions also took place on this weekend, and Washington teams did well on the whole.  The Parrots won their opening game against the BC Allstars 3-1.   They broke open their Saturday morning game against the Oregon state champion Posh to go up 5-0 before giving up a late goal.   The game was scoreless for much of the first half, however, and the 5-1 final score didn't represent the play, though the Parrots goals were nice.   That afternoon the Parrots beat the Idaho state champion Boise Capitols 1-0 in their first meeting ever.   The Parrots lost their Sunday game to the Lake Oswego Fusion, a team with whom they have had many close battles.

Team information for players still seeking teams:

Dosveedanya no longer exists.   They were always one of the strongest teams in the state, and it's a blow to the league that they couldn't continue.   We will miss our longtime rival Dos.  Justin, where are you?

Emerald City picked up at least three Dos players.   They may still have a spot.   The new EC coach is Bobby Bruch Emerald City FC 85 206-290-4574  bobbyb@spu.edu   Check for more information on Bobby's great coaching credentials here.   The EC manager is Greg White 205-323-0042 gwhite53@aol.com.

Norpoint were at 15 players two months ago, and were open to taking more if the right ones came along.   Call their coach, Steve Riggs, at 253-927-7924 for more information.

Crossfire and the Extreme are currently at the 18 player limit.   Blaze started at 18, but are now down to 17 players.   Kitsap has 17 players.   Spokane Vision has 2-3 spots.    Eastside had 16 players at last report.

The Royals are also at 18 players.  They have a new web page under construction with a link to their new roster.

The Blaze and Kitsap have added information to their websites about individual players, which is interesting to read.   Click on the team names to go to their sites, and look under "Roster".   Kitsap has a page from their club website, and a team website.    The team website has a link from the club website, and has pictures with it.

Blaze has a news page which gets into some of the deeper issues involving the team.

Three Rivers has a new coach this year.    The Shooting Stars also have 16 players reportedly.   Dave Brown, the SPCDC coaching director, is the new Stars coach.   Snohomish United is perhaps still looking for players, particularly a keeper.  Phone number for coach Ricardo Rivera is 425-337-3630.  Relentless had enough returning players to stay in P2 and a lot of new ones.   And a new coach, Seattle Sounder Craig Tomlinson.  Whidbey Islanders have a new coach, Marvin Moreno, who did a great job with Emerald City.    They were favored to go through first in the P2 LPT, and did.. Harbor FC may have a couple of spots remaining.   Contact their new coach, Helmut Immig, at 253 222 8375, or their assistant, Marla Klipper, at 253-265-1514.

The Marauders did not have enough returning players to hold their spot in the Division 2 LPT.   They combined with their B team.

The Heartbreakers had bad luck with injuries and sickness at LPTs, and still almost made it through in their depleted condition.   They reached the quarterfinals in the Snickers Cup last year, and are favored to win Classic this year.

Valez Nationals will be in Classic, and may still have room on their team.   You can reach their coach, Kosta, at 425-330-3332  SoccerCoachKP@aol.com.
